Upgrade to WordPress 2.5

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

The long-awaited WordPress 2.5 was released this weekend, and of course I just had to try it.

The upgrade process is as easy as always:

  • Make a backup,
  • Deactivate your plugins,
  • Overwrite your current WordPress directory from the downloaded TARball,
  • Login and run the automatic upgrade scipt,
  • Activate your plugins,
  • Done!

The admin interface is quite different when you log in, but the new dashboard is easy to get used to and use, so no major learning curve ahead. I found all the features I used before very quickly, and everything works fine as expected. For my blog the upgrade broke nothing in my customisation, so the upgrade was extremely painless.

Get the upgrade.

Confuse your mouse

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

Here’s a little tip to keep you awake:

  1. Get a second monitor (mine was a gift by my no. 1 coolest best friend, Robert).
  2. Use it as a dual view or extended screen to get an extended desktop and a second monitor to use while gaming or working on the first.
  3. Then place it to the left of your primary monitor, because you have more room on your desk there.
  4. Watch the confusion as every time you want to reach the screen you move the mouse left while you should be going right.

It sounds lame, but it’s a cool game. I call it “Oh For Fuck’s Sake Get It Right For Once Fatass”. Or you could call it “Why Can’t Nvidia Shift Secondary Monitor Positions?”

Microsoft upgraded me

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

As a part of my requirements at work I today completed the second exam to upgrade my MCSA (Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator) and MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) certifications from Windows 2000 to Windows 2003. I am now Bill’s drone once again.

Although I’m quite proud of the accomplishment, the first thing I did when I came home tonight is hug my Debian virtual machine :-)

Gadget: Ironkey USB stick

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

ironkey.jpgWe all have them by now (for God’s sake, even my dad has one), but they’re usually not very secure. Sure, my little Philips 2 Gig stick survived a run in the washing machine inside my jeans the other week, but lose it and your data is normally up for grabs.

IronKey has realeased what they are calling “the world’s most secure USB flash drive”. It comes in three sizes (1, 2 and 4 Gig) and looks like what you’d expect. But the fun is on the inside: it sports hardware-based military-grade AES encoding, so anything you put on there is immediately encoded by the on-board chip, and is filled with an epoxy compound to protect its innards. But get this: the crypto chip actually self-destructs if it senses that it’s being tampered with (and that’s a hardware self-destruct, not software). Mission Impossible, anyone?

The Personal version also comes with some onboard software, including a hardened version of Mozilla Firefox so you can use that to surf safely via IronKey’s Tor-based Secure Sessions proxy. How cool is that?

It also comes with a password manager and an on-line backup utility so that when you zap one IronKey all you have to do is buy a new one and the encrypted data can be downloaded back to your new drive (all encrypted, so even IronKey employees can’t see into your data).

I wonder if I can convince my boss I want gotta have need this to look cool for work…

Google Reader vs. Bloglines

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

I’ve been using Bloglines for a long time, but as of yesterday I switched to Google Reader (thanks to a tip from my friend Moqub). Both are web-based RSS feed readers, and they do mainly the same thing, but still I like Google Reader better. Here’s a short comparison as to the why:

  • Google Reader integrates with my Gmail account and other Google personalised settings
  • I really like Google’s active “read” marking. As you scroll through a feed’s posts, the posts you “pass” are automatically marked as read (can be disabled)
  • Adding, managing and sorting feeds is easier on Google (I always found Bloglines’ interface somewhat clunky)
  • I like the overview page you get with Google Reader, showing you a selection of your new unread posts

Yeah. Google wins another one.

Been listening to this all week: “Mad About You” by Hooverphonic.

You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video

Movie: Jumper

Monday, March 24th, 2008

Although the idea sounded nice (a dude with the ability to teleport or “jump” anywhere he’s either been before or has seen in person), the actual movie was a bit of a bomb.

You’d think they’d throw in some sort of idea or explanation on the how and why of the jumping, but no. You’d think Samuel L. Jackson (normally Mr. Cool himself) couldn’t play a bland and predictable character to save his life, but apparently he can. You’d think the story might go deeper than the trailer, but alas.
The FX are kinda cool here and there, but not surprising or fresh at all. There are about 3 “ha ha” moments, and that’s it.

I give it a 2 out of 5. It could have been so much more.

Another blog bites the dust

Monday, March 24th, 2008

Yes…well…ahem…erm…I guess I’ll give my blog another chance. The previous incarnations died because I either wanted to post too much which took up way too much time, or I restricted myself too much which meant I just didn’t have the content to put up.

I’ve also got rid of my previous default name ‘mark01′, mainly because people (i.e.: non-geeks) didn’t get it and thought my name was Marko (which it isn’t).

So, without further ado, here it is: Marked. All me, with loads of artificial additives.
