Virus writers must die

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

Let’s tie them up together with some spammers and script kiddies and throw them in a lake.
Any blog writer will know by now that the comments get jammed with oodles of spam automatically, but today I have some new comments in my Akismet spam queue (love that Akismet!) that post a link to blogsrate.net, which is a site just for distributing viruses. I run AVG Free 8 (a very nifty virus scanner…and it’s free!) which was kind enough to warn me:

The page you are trying to access has been identified as a known exploit, phishing, or social engineering web site and therefore has been blocked for your safety.

In fact, the site tried to push a download virus/trojan to my PC. The bastards! Ah well, another asshole is thwarted by up-to-date virus scanners (hint righ there, people! UPDATE!). And here’s the asshole in question:

Heartburn = no sleep

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

3:15 AM…I woke up without actually knowing why, and then it hit: heartburn. Man, I never had it this bad, now I understand how people can mistake heartburn for a heart attack, the pain totally sucks. I actually got up out of bed and drove to a local 24h pharmacy to get some Rennie antacid tablets. Now let’s hope these do the trick…

Getting my brain detailed

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

The blog is low on updates now, I’m getting my brain detailed on a VMware training this week.

In case you’re wondering: it’s pretty good. Good teacher, and I’m actually learning some new facts and features here and there. Plus the lunches are good ;-)

Leo as a gamer?

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

Erm…what?! Not sure whether to laugh or cry…

Leonardo DiCaprio has agreed to star in Atari, a film about video game pioneer Nolan Bushnell, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Writers Brian Hecker and Craig Sherman sold a script to Paramount at the end of last week which detailed how Bushnell went from fixing pinball machines to forming the Atari Corporation in the early ’70s. The company was eventually sold to Warner Communications for $28 million.

Bushnell was also involved in the creation of Pong and set up the Chuck E. Cheese’s Pizza Time Theatres restaurant chain.

Bad IE?

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

I know IE (Microsoft Internet Explorer) is not the quickest, not always up to (web) standard(s), not the safest, and of course carries the taint of Windows-integration-you-have-no-choice-in-and-can’t-get-rid-of, but people should be free to choose, and I actually admit to using IE side-by-side with Firefox. A small banner in my WordPress admin interface pointed me to Browse Happy, which states it’s a site to help you “choose a browser that is right for you”.

Yeah. Sure.

I agree that people should be made more aware of alternatives, but for Pete’s sake be honest about it. Browse Happy actively steers people away from IE, pointing in stead to Firefox, Opera, Safari or Mozilla, on the grounds that IE is unsafe. Yes it is. So are all the other ones. What’s your point?

Made and promoted by the otherwise great folks at WordPress, I think this is pushing it a bit far. Make a fair comparison in stead of just quoting articles about IE’s flaws, people! I’m no big fan of IE myself but I also know that with some Googling I can find quotes on the issues on all the other browsers in the world as well. Inform, don’t just shove some subjective opinions and “testimonials” down my throat.

Oh, and as much as I absolutely love WordPress, I really don’t appreciate the banner in the admin interface, thank you very much.

The joys of Indo food

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

For those of you who’ve never tasted Indonesian food…ahhhhh, you have no idea what you’re missing!

Both tonight and last Saturday I had some truly excellent Indo food (very common in The Netherlands, due to Indonesia being a former colony and shitloads of Indonesian people having migrated here, especially to The Hague, where I happen to live), Saturday’s at the Rasa Senang in Kaatsheuvel (small town in the South of Holland where the Efteling theme parc is located) and tonight at the Sama Sebo in Amsterdam. Both really excellent with great, swift and polite service.

In case you’re wondering, Indonesian food is what you’de expect from Asian food, but richer and often quite spicy. Hot on the way in, hot on the way out the next day :-)
