This is an intriguing design concept dating from 2008, once again from Art. Lebedev Studio who brought us the quite cool Optimus Maximus keyboard as well. While the Maximus has been available for some time now the Optimus Tactus is, alas, still “just” a concept.

The idea is simple yet very elegant: a keyboard which is in fact a full color touch screen. This way any configuration can be used with the multi-touch interface. Image manipulation, video playing, or just typing. Without physical keys there are no limits to any tactile interface you’d need.

I would love to get my hands on one of these, the possibilities are endless.

After a long time pondering whether or not do do it, I’ve started building a new website about web development and design, Stacked Bits, officially launched today.

The site uses a basic blogzine format and will contain articles on PHP, XHTML/CSS, and basically anything to do with web development and design I come up with.

I do realise that I have published on this subject here before, but this blog is moving more towards general IT infrastructure business and a lot of personal stuff, so I thought it’d be a fun idea to build a blog separately just for web work.

The content is somewhat limited right now, but will steadily grow as time goes on. Why not have a browse?

Having been to New York City once and remembering being at first completely baffled by the subway system and its official maps, and then, when comprehension dawned, wondering why the maps are so much more complicated than others I’ve seen (I love the complete clarity of the London Undergound map), I think the KickMap by brand strategy and design firm Kick Design (of NYC, of course) is such a massive improvement on the official MTA map; clear, concise, immediately understandable and way less confusing.

James Gardiner has written a very interesting blog post dissecting and rebutting Steve Jobs’ recent open letter on why Apple will not support Flash on its devices (translation: attacking Adobe Flash where he can).

The full post: Apples attack on Adobe Flash, its all about online video. (via Slashdot)

James closes his article with: ”In conclusion, as a developer who likes Flash, to tell the truth, I can respect the business decision by Steve to not allow Flash on their iTechnology platforms for good old competitive reasons. What is wrong here is that Apple is on a campaign of deception. They are not happy to not use flash, but are also producing FUD to displace Flash as a relevant web technology.”

I agree. In my view it’s all about the money, although James thinks it’s about the video. I think Mr. Jobs just does not want a platform that can be (and is) used for free games on his devices where he is currently making 30% off every game sold in his App Store. And that is fair and completely up to him, but just come out and say that, don’t piss on another company’s work and products to hide the fact that you like your revenue stream.
And for the record: as a developer I have rarely seen any company so closed, proprietary and revenue-focused as Apple. Apple is no longer “cool” (although they do make very “cool” products), it is just as much an “Evil Empire” as they say Microsoft, Google, Adobe or anyone else is. No biggie, it happens to every company at that level, but for God’s sake be honest about what you are.

This is something I had not bumped into before, but today I downloaded a free WordPress theme to adapt to my own wishes (which usually involves a whole lot of hacking and slashing), but this one took some extra time because it was riddled with invisible links to several commercial sites, apparently to boost them via the bots that usually visit blogs. The crappy part was that the code that published the links was actually encrypted to prevent removing the links. This particular creator even went so far as to change the default WordPress ‘Meta’ links to his own site.

Translation: if I hadn’t been hacking my way through the code I wouldn’t easily have found the semi-hidden links, so anyone just downloading and using this theme or one like it will inadvertently aid these somewhat immoral practices and end up with a slightly crippled blog.

Update: After finding that all of their themes have these links etc. I’ve decided to name and shame: the free templates came from wpthemescreator.

Update 2: Some more investigation even found some hidden encrypted code in the theme that inserted links to the creator’s site quasi-randomly in the blog’s links and probably the footer as well. Yechh. I’ve decided to still use the cleaned up theme but remove any link to the creators, even though that is normally against my principles.
